Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a discharge phenomenon caused by the accumulation of electrostatic charges. ESD simulator, ESD generator, also known as "ESD gun", is a device that can generate a wide range of ESD pulses, which uses a high-voltage power supply to transport charges to the surface of the test sample, so that it accumulates electrostatic charges, and then carries out discharge experiments by simulating different realistic scenarios to test the electrostatic discharge resistance of various electronic components.
It is used to evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic equipment, devices or systems when subjected to electrostatic discharge.
They are essential for product development, especially in testing products against potential electrostatic discharges.
There are different types of simulators, like the charged device model (CDM), human body model (HBM), and machine model (MM).
- Charged Device Model (CDM): Simulates scenarios in manufacturing environments.
- Human Body Model (HBM): Mimics the discharge of static electricity from a human body
- Machine Model (MM): Examines how equipment responds to discharges from nearby machines.
EMCSOSIN ESD simulators adhere to the standards of IEC/EN 61000-4-2, ISO 10605.
The highest electrostatic voltage can be up to 30kV, which is enough to cover the most severe standard level (level 4 air discharge test voltage up to 15kV).
A simplified diagram of the ESD generator is given as below.

How to use EMCSOSIN ESD simulator?
- Wiring/connection: Connect the ESD simulator to your test EUT. Make sure the grounding wire is properly connected. Select the appropriate contact device connection method as per different test requirements.
- Parameter setting: Select appropriate ESD waveform, discharge voltage, discharge mode and other parameters as per the testing requirements. Device built in IEC standard level mode, which is easy to use.
- Conduct testing: After setting the parameters, user can proceed the testing. By triggering the discharge switch on the device, the ESD generator will release stored electrical energy and discharge it, simulating an electrostatic discharge event and applying it to the DUT.
- Record and analyze results: The response and performance changes of the DUT during test will be recorded, such as current, voltage, etc. Analyze the results based on the recorded data, evaluate the ESD tolerance of the equipment, and make corresponding improvements and product rectifications.
As a key tool for ESD testing of electronic devices and systems, ESD generator plays an important role in the development and manufacturing process of electronic products and equipment. When using it, please ensure a stable and reliable connection and carefully set the parameter. By recording and analyzing the test results, the ESD tolerance of the equipment can be evaluated, and corresponding rectification and improvement can be carried out to improve the reliability and stability of the product, to ensure that it is not affected by ESD related issues in practical use.
