Simple Operation of ESD Simulator

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a common natural phenomenon (When an electrically charged object approaches or contacts a conductor, the charge transfer occurs, which is known as electrostatic discharge). The effects of ESD on electrical and electronic equipment, devices or systems are everywhere. It is a very high degree of harmful electromagnetic energy.

ESD simulators are devices designed to mimic the electrostatic discharges that can occur in real-world scenarios. These discharges can be harmful to electronic devices, causing malfunctions, data corruption, or even permanent damage. ESD simulators help in understanding how a product would react to such discharges and if it can withstand them.

Only to improve the level of anti-static interference can ensure the safe use of electronic products. EMCSOSIN self-developed ESD generators are used to evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic equipment, devices or systems when subjected to electrostatic discharge. The highest electrostatic voltage can be up to 30kV, which is enough to cover the most severe standard level (level 4 air discharge test voltage up to 15kV). By replacing different accessories, it can be used for the comparability and reproducibility of various electrical and electronic equipment for ESD tests.

EMCSOSIN ESD Simulator Simple Operation

1. ESD test setup

ESD test setup shall consist of a non-conductive table, standing on the GRP (ground reference plane). A horizontal coupling plane (HCP) shall be placed on the table. The EUT and its cables shall be isolated from the coupling plane by an insulating support.

An example of the test setup for table-top equipment is given as below.

2. There're two types of discharge electrode, air discharge electrode: with the round tip

contact discharge electrode: with the sharp tip. Connect the metal electrode to the ESD gun head. Connect the grounding crocodile clip to the ground reference plane. Make sure no other electronic devices exist in the test environment to avoid damage. And then power on device.

3. Set test parameters on color touch screen.

  • Voltage polarity: +, -, +/-, -/+
  • Set test voltage: 0.2~20kV/0.2~30kV
  • Discharge method: Contact discharge (the sharp tip), air discharge (the round tip)
  • Interval: 0.05~9.99s
  • Number of discharges: 1~9999
  • Trigger mode: Manual, auto, 20PPS, single, gun control

4. When the parameters are set, click "Start" on device color screen and carry out test.
