What does ESD stands for?
ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. It refers to the phenomenon of charge transfer from one object to another when two objects with different electrostatic potentials are close to each other or in direct contact.

What is ESD testing?
ESD testing is the process of testing a device's resistance to ESD (electrostatic discharge).

What is the purpose of ESD testing?

The purpose of ESD testing is to evaluate the performance of electronical and electronic devices under the ESD environment, ensuring that they will not be damaged when subjected to electrostatic discharge interference, and to learn their stability, reliability, and safety in that environment.

ESD immunity testing is a critical part of product development and quality assurance processes. By exposing the product to controlled ESD events, manufacturers can assess its ability to function correctly during and after the test, ensuring that the products are ESD safe.

What is ESD testing instrument & its principle?
ESD testing instrument include ESD generator, or ESD simulator, or ESD gun and the testing site.
ESD generator can generate high voltage, low-current electrostatic discharge. It can simulator human body or other objects electrostatic discharge phenomenon.
ESD testing site shall have the appropriate grounding and protective measures, to ensure safety of the testing.
The base ESD testing principle is IEC/EN 61000-4-2 standard: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) – Part 4-2: Testing and measurement techniques – Electrostatic discharge immunity test.

What is ESD testing environment and test setup?

ESD testing environment:

Climate conditions should meet the atmospheric pressure range of 86kpa to 106kpa
Ambient temperature: 15℃ to 35℃
Relative humidity: 30% to 60%
ESD test setup:

ESD testing setup include an ESD generator, ESD testing table, HCP, VCP, GRP, 2*470kOhm resistors cable, insulating sheet…

What is ESD testing steps?
1) The EUT shall be arranged and connected according to its functional requirements
2) ESD generator output connect to the EUT testing position.
3) Run the ESD generator and gradually increase voltage of the ESD generator to test.
4) Observe the performance of EUT during ESD testing and record relevant data.
5) Perform the same ESD test on all testing locations and record the data.
6) Analyze the test data and evaluate the performance, reliability of the EUT.

Cautions for ESD testing?
1) ESD test setup can meet the requirements specified by IEC/EN 61000-4-2, properly grounded.
2) Note the danger for high voltage. Do NOT touch the ESD gun tip during discharge operation.
3) When conducting air discharge, the round discharge tip cannot touch simulator housing.
4) Please discharge the gun head with the grounding wire after each electrostatic test. Check whether the function of the discharge is normal, and then continue to discharge.
5) Make sure the ESD generator stopped running when replace EUT during testing.
