What are surge pulses?
Surge pulses occur due to direct or indirect lightning strokes to an external (outdoor) circuit. Another source for surge pulses is switching transients originating from switching disturbances and systems faults.

Surge pulses lead to currents or electromagnetic fields causing high voltage or current transients. The energy is particularly large. And the impact on electronical and electronic products might be destructive.
What is a surge generator?
Surge generator is a testing device used to generate fast rise time, short duration waveform to replicate indirect lightning and power grid switching transients on power or data lines. It is used to to evaluate the performance of device subjected to high energy disturbances from the power line port and other signal line ports.
Surge testing requirements/standards?
The most common surge test requirements is IEC/EN 61000-4-5 standard, which specify the testing requirements on both power and data line ports.
