What is ESD testing?

ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic discharge is the rapid release of energy between two objects with different potential charges, commonly through air and contact discharge, caused by the buildup of static electricity.

ESD testing is an EMC immunity test. The goal of ESD testing is to ensure immunity, or that performance or functionality of the equipment is not changed because of exposure to electrostatic discharge events. Electrostatic discharge simulators, or ESD simulators, ESD generators, or ESD guns are is used to evaluate the electrostatic immunity performance of electrical components and electronic equipment by simulating real electrostatic discharge as defined in the standard IEC/EN 61000-4-2.

There are a variety of different manufacturers that manufacture ESD simulators. Our ESD simulators can get up to 20kV & 30kV, which is suitable for most ESD compliance testing.
